A IGREJA E ESCRAVIDÃO NEGRA NO BRASIL
Abstract
A lot of people, even nowadays, feel scandalized considering the altitude of the Church in relation to slavery. Brasil maintained slavery for more than three centuries. The Church rarely made any opposition and the largest part of the moralists accepted it as a legal and legitimate institution. It is true that some missionaries preached against such an institution and therefore were banished from the country. Even secular and regular clergymen had slaves at their Service. In this article the author brings forth what the Church did and what It did not do in benefit of the slaves.
