The author analyses and looks through the life and works of Santos Saraiva, a wise Portuguese priest (ex-priest), who came to Brasil a century ago, and here he settled down and worked. Santos Saraiva was a philologist, scientist, professor, poet, polemic debater, translator and exegete. Through his work and altitudes Santos Saraiva mirrors the situation of the Church in Brasil during the second half of the last century. The author depicts with historical objectivity the drama this priest had to undergo in his life. The article questions us whether the present structures of the Church really favor the growth of the faith, or, on the other hand, these structures are not responsible for many other dramas like the one of Santos Saraiva.
