AGOSTINHO E A POLÊMICA MEDIEVAL DO TEOR DAS RELAÇÕES ENTRE A MEMÓRIA, A INTELIGÊNCIA E A VONTADE

Resumo

Partindo da definição agostiniana da “mens” (como imagem do Deus-Trino), pretende-se mostrar como Agostinho, através de uma ótica não-dualista da realidade, nos conduz a uma concepção da alma como imagem de Deus unitrinitária (memoria, intelligentia, uoluntas) e a uma visão não dualista do mundo. Primeiramente examina-se em que sentido a vontade, a memória e a inteligência, podem ser ditas potências distintas e iguais entre si, e aquilo que há de mais importante na mens enquanto imagem de Deus. Em seguida é introduzida a polêmica medieval do teor das relações da memoria-intelligentia-voluntas apresentando-se o contexto agostiniano de origem dessa discussão e alguns desdobramentos. O trabalho finaliza-se com a discussão da identidade da alma e suas potências reportando-se a Tomás de Aquino, à forma como interpretou e desenvolveu o pensamento agostiniano.

Abstract: Starting from Augustine's definition of mens, the paper tries to demonstrate how this author forms a conception of the soul as the Trinitarian image of God through a non dualistic perspective of reality. The first section examines in which sense will, memory and intelligence can be considered different and equal faculties and what is the most important in mens as the image of God. Thereafter, the paper focuses on the Medieval controversy over the meaning of the relations between memoria-intelligentia-voluntas, emphasizing the Augustinian context from which it originated as well as some of its developments. The paper concludes the analysis of the identity of the soul with its faculties, showing how Thomas Aquinas interpreted and developped the Augustinian thought.
