LIBERTÉ DU MARCHÉ ET COMMUNAUTÉ HUMAINE

Abrégé: Le marché libre est aujourd'hui l'objet d'une critique communautarienne qui cherche à montrer que son extension à tous les aspects de l'existence aboutirait à l'érosion des rapports proprement humains, fondés sur la vivacité des interrogations morales, au profit de relations purement instrumentales et intéressées. Les partisans d'une société de marché ont cependant répondu à ces critiques en soulignant les vertus libératrices de l'échange marchand qui permet aux individus de s'extraire d'un contexte de statuts et de dépendance. L'article reconstitue ce débat et montre pour conclure que si la position des partisans du marché est plausible, elle ne l'est qu'à condition que le marché lui même soit étroitement contrôlé pour garantir l'indépendance des contractants qui y procèdent aux échanges.

Abstract: Free market today is the object of a communitarian critique which aims to show that its extension, in all aspects of life, would lead to the erosion of human relationships based on the dynamism of moral questioning and would solely benefit instrumental and self-serving relationships. However, the advocates of a market-oriented society have responded to these critiques by underlying the liberating virtues of market exchanges which allow individuals to move away from a context of statuses and dependency. This article reconstructs the debate and concludes that although the market advocates arguments are plausible, they are only so in a closely controlled market that guarantees the independence of the contracting parties involved in exchanges.
