DISCURSO SOBRE DEUS, SUBSTÂNCIA E LIBERDADE NAS CORRESPONDÊNCIAS ENTRE LEIBNIZ E ARNAULD

Resumo

A correspondência entre Leibniz e Arnauld oferece uma excelente oportunidade para se compreender o registro filosófico leibniziano, o seu desenvolvimento e implicações. São cartas que, além de exemplares de um verdadeiro debate acadêmico, nos colocam em contato com as articulações filosófico-metafísicas de Leibniz, as quais, distanciando-se de certas características do cartesianismo e do ocasionalismo, intentam conciliar pensamento e método modernos com a filosofia clássica e a teologia. O discurso sobre Deus, substância e liberdade, com base no praedicatum inest subjecto, é justificado pela perspectiva segundo a qual a essência das substâncias é exprimir e representar o universo.

Abstract: The letters between Leibniz and Arnaud provide an excellent opportunity to understand the Leibnizian philosophical system, its development and implications. Besides being samples of a remarkable academic debate, they also facilitate the contact with the metaphysical–philosophical articulations which, by distancing themselves from certain Cartesian and Occasionalist characteristics, attempt to link modern thought and method with classical philosophy and theology. The discourse about God, substance and freedom, based on the praedicatum inest subjecto, is justified by the perspective that the very essence of the substances is to express and represent the universe.
