CIÊNCIA E CULTURA À LUZ DA FILOSOFIA CRISTÃ

Resumo

Ciência e cultura à luz da filosofia cristã: À luz do pensamento cristão, em particular da filosofia tomista, o A. examina duas posições extremistas. De uma parte, a do cientismo e positivismo que, reduzindo a cultura e o pensamento em geral unicamente à ciência positiva, só dela esperam a solução dos problemas da humanidade. De outra parte, a posição amiúde assumida por existencialistas e idealistas, que vêem na ciência e na técnica fatores negativos, destruidores da cultura verdadeiramente humana, da originalidade do pensamento, da liberdade da pessoa. Ao contrário, ciência e cultura são fatores complementares no desenvolvimento harmônico do pensamento e na promoção dos valores humanos. E importante notar que a revolução da ciência hodierna, comparada com a ciência clássica, favorece o reconhecimento dessa complementaridade.

Summary: Science and culture from the standpoint of Christian philosophy: The author examines two counter-positions, viewed from the standpoint of Christian thought, and more precisely, the Thomistic philosophy. The first dealt with scientism and positivism, both of which reduce culture and thought in general to positive science, from which both systems try to arrive at solutions to the problems of mankind. In contrast, the second concerns existentialists and idealists who view science and technology as negative factors which destroy genuine culture, human thought, and essential freedom. Then the author sets forth the essentials of the case by showing that science and culture are complementary factors both in a harmonious development of thought and in the promotion of human values. Moreover, it is important to note that the constant progress made in the scientific field over against old models used in classical science favors the viewpoint conceding the complementary relationship of the factors previously mentioned.
