A HISTÓRIA E O MAL

Resumo

A "Prece para o Bom uso das Doenças" pode ser tomada como um momento propício para a reflexão acerca do tema História e Interioridade em Pascal. A doença modifica a nossa relação com a exterioridade e esta mudança tem um sentido que só o cristão pode desvelar inteiramente. A fragilidade física é figura da fragilidade da alma. Se interpretarmos esta figurabilidade seremos capazes de ver nela uma orientação para a inflexão da história pessoal no sentido da conversão. Mas isto só será possível se compreendermos, à luz da fé, a profunda inversão de valores que o cristianismo propõe entre a exterioridade e a interioridade: é a relação constitutiva entre o mal e a história exterior que nos permite buscar na anulação da exterioridade, na fragilidade de nossa relação com o mundo - de que a doença é causa ocasional – a inquietação interior que pode nos aproximar de Deus.

Abstract: Prayer for a Profitable Use of Illness could be considered as an appropriate occasion for a new insight about the topic of History and Interiority as dealt with by Pascal. Illness changes one's relationship with the external world and this change means that only the Christian Faith can throw light on the condition of the suffering person. Physical fragility is an image of the afflicted soul. If we interpret fragility in terms of conflicting situations whereby one's value system turns towards new horizons opening up in one's life, then we have a conversion. But this will only be possible if in the light of faith we take into account these values and the need of selftranscendence. Moral and intellectual conversion look beyond exteriority towards revealed values afflicting the interior state of man, thus giving him secure orientation to face the universe, its ground, and its goal. In this sense he is able to discern the way leading to an encounter with God.
