O UNIVERSAL COMO INTENTIO ANIMAE EM GUILHERME DE OCKHAM

Resumo

O artigo examina a "pars construens" da teoria de Guilherme de Ockham sobre os Universais, a saber: o universal como "intentio animae". A tese central do autor em questão consiste em afirmar que o universal é um "signum"; por sua natureza, não pode formar nem concorrer para constituir a essência de uma realidade. Sendo um conceito, serve somente para explicá-la ou ilustrá-la. Em vários escritos quer comentando Aristóteles, quer comentando a obra Isagogé de Porfírio de Tiro, com sua análise dos cinco predicáveis, Guilherme de Ockham concentra sua teoria dos Universais na apreensão do singular.

Abstract: This article examines the "pars construens" in Guilherme de Ockham's theory on the Universal, that is to say, the universal as "intentio animae". The author's main thesis consists in asserting that the universal is a "signum" and that, by nature, it can neither constitute the essence of a reality nor take part in its constitution. Being a concept, it is only useful to explain or illustrate it. Though several works, especially commentaries on Aristotles or on Porfírio de Tiro's Isagogé, with his analysis of the five predicables Guilherme de Ockham concentrates his theory of the Universal on an apprehension of the singular.
