VONTADE DIVINA E CONTINGÊNCIA NA CORRESPONDÊNCIA LEIBNIZ-ARNAULD

Resumo

Este trabalho aborda o problema da contingência em Leibniz, tal como apresentado em sua correspondência com Arnauld. Nestas cartas, diferentemente de outros textos, Leibniz busca dar um peso maior à vontade divina na elaboração do conceito de contingência, o que se dá através da noção de decretos livres possíveis. O destaque dado ao papel da vontade divina garante que o sistema leibniziano não caia no espinosismo, porém, como conseqüência, deve também levar ao reconhecimento de que a compatibilidade e a incompatibilidade das noções não podem ser determinadas exclusivamente pelo entendimento de Deus.

Abstract: This paper exposes the problem of contingency in Leibniz as it is presented in his written correspondence with Arnauld. In their letters, as opposed to other texts, Leibniz tries to give greater weight to divine will as he elaborates the concept of contingency and he does so by using the notion of possible free decrees. The importance given to the role of God's will assures that Leibniz's system will not fall into Spinozism, but, consequently, it must also lead to the recognition that the compatibility or incompatibility of notions cannot be exclusively determined by God's understanding.
