OS RELIGIOSOS NA HISTORIA DA EVANGELIZAÇAO DA AMÉRICA LATINA

Resumo

Trata-se de uma comunicação ao Encontro da Conferência Latino-Americana de Religiosos (CLAR) realizado em Santo Domingo, RD, em 1986. O Autor empreende uma avaliação histórico-crítica da ação evangelizadora dos religiosos na América Latina, em particular nos domínios da Coroa espanhola. Na primeira parte é estudado o chamado "modelo alexandrino" de evangelização, inspirado na Bula Inter Coetera de Alexandre VI de 1493. Esse modelo é caracterizado pelo desígnio fundamental de uma "conquista evangelizadora", obedecendo a um projeto político-religioso que tem como fim a implantação de um Estado cristão nas novas terras. A ambigüidade desse modelo está na origem de conflitos e tensões entre os religiosos e os representantes do poder real, sobretudo no tocante à liberdade dos índios. Esse problema ocupa a segunda parte, onde as Reduções são apresentadas como um meio de humanização do sistema. A terceira parte analisa as limitações e os erros do projeto de evangelização desenvolvido pelos religiosos, sobretudo o etnocentrismo e a ideologia da conquista. A quarta parte, enfim, estuda as condições do trabalho evangelizador atual dos religiosos na AL e descreve as opções fundamentais que o orientam.

SUMMARY: This paper was presented to a meeting of the Latin American Religious Conference held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1986. The A. undertakes an historical-critical evaluation of the evangelization by the religious in Latin America, particularly in the Spanish Crown dominions. The first part studies the so called "alexandrian model" of evangelization, inspired by the Bull Inter Coetera of Alexander VI in 1493. This model is characterized by the fundamental design of an "evangelizing conquest", obeying a political religious project that has as its end the establishment of a christian State in the new lands. The ambiguity of this model lies in the origin of conflicts and tensions among the religious and the representativos of royal power, above all in relation 'to the liberty of the indians. This problem occupies the second part, where the Reductions are presented as means of humanizing the system. The third part analyses the limitations and the errors of the evangelization project developed by the religious, above all the ethnocentricism and the conquest ideology. Finally, the fourth part studies the conditions of present day evangelization efforts by religious in Latin America and describes the fundamental options that orient these efforts.
