Resumo

Existem diferenças significativas entre o pensamento político medieval, vivido e trabalhado em favor de um Estado Pontifício que se fundamentava em uma unidade cristã européia, e as formas de pensar o poder na época moderna em que o esforço passou a concentrar-se na afirmação de um poder "secularizado". A despeito das profundas transformações ocorridas no período, com o descrédito do poder espiritual pelo fortalecimento das monarquias, a matríz do pensamento político resistiu e perdurou como um registro eminentemente teológico, vale dizer, um simbolismo político com estruturas de teor medieval.
